The Tainan also operated both the J1N1-C Type 2 Land reconnaissance plane Rikujō Teisatsu-ki (九八式陸上偵察機) rikutei (Profile 38) and C5M Type 98 Land Reconnaissance plane Rikujō Teisatsu-ki (九八式陸上偵察機) rikutei (Profile 36).

The Type 2s flew some of their earliest missions over Australia - Horn Island, Townsville and Cairns warranting their scrutiny. The C5M rikutei retained white tail markings with red piping.

Profile 37 portrays D3A1 kanbaku of Dai-2 Kokutai which served alongside the Tainan at Buna in August 1942.
